I am planning on getting a 600 watt amp and an 800 watt sub....can I just go to the local hardware store and buy wire from their spools for my power and ground cables, and the terminal rings and do it myself? also do I need a capacitor? and 4 gauge right?
Yes, you absolutely can. Hardware stores have some decent quality wire, definetly get 4 guage. The only downside to the stuff their is that its usually not as flexible as some of the car stuff, since the strands are a bit thicker. No matter what anyone says, there is no difference between hardware store/welding cable and car audio cable. "Boaters world", a boating store had some really nice power cables too, i used some of their 2 gauge in an old car.

No, you dont really need a capacitor. I am not really a believer in them at all. There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding them. They dont stop headlight dimming, they dont "save" your battery or alternator. They are virtually useless IMO.
