Can it work? i plan to use a 2500 watt power inverter to power 2 X 1000 watt 115volts portable air conditioning units. i also would like to power the inverter with DC current from a car alternator. The alternator will be powered by an electric motor. and is it possible for this setup to come off the grid totally? I got a lot of ideas and technical experience but not an expert in this field any good advice would be greatly appreciated.
Assuming 100% efficiency EVERYWHERE in your system (no chance, you might get 70% if you are lucky), you are going need 2000/12 = 167 AMP alternator. This is road-train truck big.
The most efficient and likely to succeed is to drive the compressor in the AC directly from the engine - you avoid the conversion losses of going alternator>DC>inverter>aircon compressor motor>compressor.
Probably start by looking up RV compressors and RV aircon.
