general questions about sound systems (with specific head unit)?
Hello there,
I have a 2006 Ford Escape Limited and I'm interested in buying a new sound system. I found this nice touchscreen that can feed 4x50W speakers (http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info.php/pName/street-wolf-highdef-touchscreen-car-dvd-player-gps-dvbt/). I was wondering, being a newbie in these things, about the following:
1- The amplifier has to be 5 channels in order to connect to 4 speakers and one 10” or 12” subwoofer, correct?
2- If I have tweeters in the front, does that add channels?
3- Is it better to have 1 amp for the speakers, 1 for the sub and 1 for the tweeters? Or what is the right combination? (i.e. 1 for speakers and tweeters, 1 for sub, etc.)
4- I’m interested in Futureshop (www.futureshop.ca) sound systems, what would connect to this head unit for example? (please provide an example of each: amp, speakers, sub if possible.)
Please answer in this format. That’s about it, thank you guys so much!! I truly appreciate it.
1. not necessarily. you can get two amps, one for subs and the other for speakers. the speakers amp (make sure its a class AB) can be either 2 or 4 channels, but in your case a 4 channel would be perfect, since the head units got dedicated RCA audio outputs for both front and rear. now for the sub, you would want a class D amp (they're all pretty much monoblock, or one channel). this way, you lessen the load as compared to having a 5 channel amp, and depending on how you wire it and what the amp can handle, you can add more than one sub to that amp.
2. technically no. the tweeter and the mids go through a passive crossover, which basically combine them into one channel. i say technically because you CAN make the tweeter a separate channel than the mid by bypassing the crossover and using an equalizer instead, but even then the equalizer will take care of the separate channel, so for your case do not worry about this, (just find the crossover in your vehicle and that single channel will power both the tweeter and the mid speaker)
3. having one amp for subs and one for mids & highs (tweeters) is ideal, but having a separate amp for the tweeters is redundant, especially since most class AB subs have a frequency response of ~20,000Hz, which is enough to feed audio to both the mids and the tweeters.
4. anything can be hooked up to the head unit (my friend had a computer hooked up to his, i have a super nintendo hooked up to mine). the directions for the head unit should be included, and if in doubt, get a wiring harness for your car (amazon is a great source of this).
good luck with your installation!
