I would like to convert a car subwoofer to a personal sub I can use for my home. How do I do it?

That might be a fun little project. So what exactly do you want to do?
-Do you want to just use the subwoofer driver and put it in a home subwoofer cabinet?
-Or, do you have the car subwoofer in a carpeted car subwoofer enclosure that you want to use in your home?
-Or, is you objective just to save some money by moving your car subwoofer into you home as a home theater sub?
Well, you probably can do any of them for around $200-$300, depending upon how you go about it. If you want to just use your car subwoofer and car enclosure, all you will have to do is get an amplifier that is capable of driving your car sub. I would suggest getting a dedicated powered subwoofer amplifier and cutting out the appropriate sized hole to attach it to your subwoofer cabinet -and voila! This way you have the built-in crossover necessary to blend your subwoofer's bass into your home speakers.
If you have a receiver with a SUB OUT connection, the crossover is already built-in to the receiver and you could just get a monoblock amplifier (with a 4-Ohm power rating) or a stereo amp that you can bridge into a monoblock.
But, if you're just trying to save money, there's a few good choices out there that will do a good job, and there are some even better ones in the form of a kit if you don't mind doing a little work with your hands.
All-in-all it can be done at a reasonable expense.
