When a subwoofer is powered by a amplifier that isn't strong enough can the sub be damaged?
I was told by an installer that my 700 watt amp (350 per channel) would damage my 12 inch woofers because it didn't have enough power. The sub and amp are sony xplod including the head unit which has 52 watts x 4 and has controls for subs. I also need suggestions for the best setup.
ok...the installer is right...to a point...there is something called distortion, that happens along the wires and components that tends to muddle the sound...bad wires, crappy amps, cheaply recorded or encoded songs, low voltages, engine noise, and hundreds of other factors all make the sound distorted...Distortion is what makes speakers blow...
A sub can be played with 100% distortion, and last very long AS LONG as the mechanical limits, and the thermal specifications for the sub aren't breached...untreated distortion will cause cone wobble, messing up the mechanical factors, and over work the sub causing thermal difficulties...
Crappy amplifiers become more distorted as the gain is turned up more and more...
HOWEVER...teh sony xplod subs really aren't very good at all, and are the ultimate beginner subs...they are designed so that a retard can successfully put together a system...They can handle LOTS of distortion...it won't sound great, but its not gonna blow as fast as a top of the line sub would...
so..I wouldn't worry too much about underpowering the subwoofer.....just know that to be healthy, you should only turn the gain up until you hear distortion...with a crappy amp, its not gonna be loud at all...
also...tell your installer this...
