What bands can the beltronics sti driver radar detector not pick up and how common are they?
In Gainesville, FL
The Beltronics STi Driver detects all radar bands used in the USA; X, K, and Ka. It will also detect police laser, LIDAR, using multiple laser sensors. Radar uses microwave radio signals to measure speed, while laser uses a very focused infrared laser beam to measure speed.
The STi uses a breakthrough microwave receiver (antenna) that emits no radio signals. All other radar detectors not based on this technology emit detectable radio emissions that police can identify in areas where the use of detectors are illegal (DC & VA for cars, all 50 states for commercial vehicles). The STi Driver also boasts top of the line radar detection range which is very effective at detecting instant-on radar when a vehicle several miles ahead is targeted by it. I disagree with mustanger, Instant-on radar is not commonly used in the USA. Constant-on radar is far more prevalent than instant-on radar or laser.
As mustanger correctly pointed out, due to the nature of laser, no detector will give you much, if any, warning of laser until it has your speed. To combat laser, the Beltronics STi is compatible with their ZR4 laser defense system which shifts, or jams, laser signals. These systems are extremely effective against laser. Jamming laser is not federally illegal but some municipalities prohibit their use, while jamming radar is federally illegal and is a felony (laser is light and not governed by the FCC, while radar is). No reputable company offers true radar jammers in the USA so do not fall for those that claim they do.
I've been in the radar/laser countermeasure industry for over 15 years. The newer high-end detectors, like the STi, are incredibly effective devices.
