What is the Difference between Speaker boxes???
im tryin to get a 12" sub and found that the box i wanted (for looks) cost just as much as the freakin speaker. now the question is .. because its not a the subwoofer isnt made for bandpass enclosures and can be seal'd in a regular box do boxes make the sound any different? they just hold the speaker right ?? or am i wrong ? i saw a 12" carpeted speaker at one store for $30 and another box at another store for $70 both hold 12"s so confused ...... which should i get? does it matter ?
Actually, the box very important in determining the sound of the speaker; it does not just "hold" the speaker. A bandpass (ported) enclosure is popular because it offers higher volume per power output, but is sonically inferior because of bass frequency distortion. It also can be smaller in terms of interior volume for this reason. A sealed box is the best acoustically because it accurately reproduces low freqs, but requires a larger interior volume and greater power input. If you want real music, go with sealed, if you only care about Bass, get a ported box. Either way, a quality-built box will not be cheap; you get what you pay for.
