Im trying to figure out a way to lower the ohm load on my 6x9's from the standard 4ohm to 2ohm, so to draw the amount of power from the amp as i need. My idea was to buy a 4ohm resistor from Radio Shack and just wire it up to the speakers' terminal in parallel. Would this work? If anyone else has a better way, help would be appreciated! Thanks!
No, it won't work...
There are a couple of reasons why it won't really work like you desire. Sure you will drop the impedance but it won't have the desired effect you want.
If you wire a resistor in parallel you will have the same voltage across both the speaker and the resistor (basic principle of parallel wiring). Now the current will choose the path of least resistance. If the resistance is the same then you will have equal current through both the resistor and speaker. Since voltage times current equals power you can see that both the speaker and resistor will have the same amount of power. In other words, the resistor will dissipate about half of the power. This negates any reason for dropping the load on the amp in the first place.
There are other reasons why it wouldn't work as well but all you need to know is no, it won't work.
It won't be that bad if you give the speaker less power then you want. Everytime you double the power you get a 3 db increase. So you will only be loosing around 3 db at most by having it at a 4 ohm load instead of a 2 ohm load. You won't hardly hear the difference.
Just don't turn up the gain to make up the underpowering or you will have issues with clipping.
