I am trying to temporarily wire a kitchen light. Had to move to switch from one place to another and the original wire is to short. I intend on replaceing the old wire completely but until then I was going to connect a new wire in a junction box to extend it. I keep getting power on the ground wire and know this is not right. Can these wires even be used together?
You shouldn't use the two wire (white, black, ground) in place of 3 wire (red, black, white, no ground). Three wire with ground is what you need for the temporary and future permanent repair. If you don't have some, buy some, the price won't be as shocking as your temporary fix might be. The other fix would be a second run of two wire w/ground using the second black wire as the red wire.
