Power Fuse Automotive
electrical automotive problem?

A car I am working on recently had its battery fried due to incorrect battery jump starting (the old battery ignited). After installing the new battery, some of the electrical components function. The car can start, and the headlights work. Others do not, such as brake lights of power windows. However, I cannot get out of park and beyond reverse. What is preventing the car from shifting into reverse? Do I require replacement of the solenoid? (Let us also assume that the fuses have been all replaced correctly)
Edit: Even with the brake pedal depressed, it won't budge. I can manually override the safety by pushing the button on the shifting console, which can allow the shifter into reverse at any time, but that is of course a temporary solution.

There is a solenoid that prevents the gearshift from being moved from park unless the brake is depressed, either the solenoid is bad or the switch on the brake. If it's a 1996 or newer car the computer could be fried as well, they don't like high voltage.
