Current is by definition the flow of positive charge. If it is negative charge carriers carrying this current, then current is in the opposite direction as actual motion of the negative charge carriers.
In wires, electrons, which are negative are the charge carriers. Positive charges aren't involved in charge transport because the protons are constrained in the metal atoms' nuclei. Even though electrons flow through the wire from negative to positive, the CURRENT flows from positive to negative. Bear in mind that circuits don't necessarily need to have electrons as charge carriers, circuits within your brain work with positive sodium ions.
It is an artifact of history that the electron is negative. Benjamin Franklin defined positive and negative charges without knowledge that the negative electron was being exchanged. He took a guess and got it "wrong". It makes for an interesting hypothetical time travel goal:
