Ported enclosures are much more fickle when it comes to design and output. Playing with the volume of the box, the area of the port, and the length of the port will yield very different outcomes on the performance of the system. The relationship between the port area/length and the volume of the box is called the Tuning Frequency (Fb). An enclosure tuned with low Fb will have a much lower frequency extension, so it will be able to hit the low-lows which is often what true sound quality seekers want because it will lead to the flattest frequency response possible (no peaks). Enclosures with high Fb will usually have a peak frequency which the system will have the highest output at, a lot of rap has bass lines in the 40Hz range it is very common for ported enclosures to have a tuning around that to get the most output in that range.
Sealed enclosures are much more simple. There really isn't much tuning you can do besides increasing the enclosure size or decreasing it. With sealed box's the rule of thumb is the larger the enclosure the lower the sub will be able to play, smaller enclosures lose low frequency extension but have a sort of punchier sound that some people like. Sealed are most known for giving great sound quality but at the expense of efficiency (they wont get as loud as ported)
In the end you won't know which one sounds better until you try them out. Always pay attention to the recommended enclosure specs that the sub manufacturer gives you.
