comcast digital upgrade recording?
Comcast is ready to upgrade my cable signal to their new digital which requires a box for every TV. It turns out that my new Panasonic video/DVD recorder once recommended by a Comcast agent will no longer record programs with the automatic change channels stop/start at a chosen time unless somebody knows something Comcast tech support does not -- which is highly likely. Seems like my brand new Panasonic super DVD recorder player has been reduced to junk and Comcast tech support recommended I purchase the one Comcast has for sale which has limited capability. Can anyone give me a better option?
If your DVD recorder has a programmable IR blaster output, it can be used to change the channels on the cable box. But you'd still only have a single tuner, so you couldn't watch one channel while recording another.
Basically, digital cable has made VCRs and DVD recorders essentially obsolete. While setups like the IR Blaster solution above may (or may not) work, they are generally too much of a hassle for most people, what with extra wires, new remote control codes etc. The modern solution to this is the DVR, You can get a dual-tuner one from Comcast or get a TiVo box. Either way, there will be yet another monthly fee to pay.
I think that cable companies would have been able to make this all work with the QAM tuners in almost all HDTVs, but they've instead chosen to add DRM to almost everything, even many basic cable channels.
