what do I have to do to convert to manual transmission?
I have a 74 Chevy Blazer with a turbo 350, 3 speed automatic transmission w/ married 4x4 transfer case. Everything regarding the drive systems on this Blazer are stock except for the manual locking hub conversion kit on the wheels. I want to know a couple of things here. Is there a manual transmission that will bolt right up to the setup I have? And if so, is it possible that I will find one in a vehicle thats been junked in the scrap yard or will I need to order one from a company online or elsewhere? I am really getting sick of having only 3 gears.... especially when the engine I have could really exploit the advantages of a manual transmission in a 4x4 vehicle.
You should be able to find a stock 4 speed at the junkyard somewhere for a chevy, hopefully you can get all the parts to go along with it at the same time. Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disk, throwout bearing, clutch linkage, clutch pedal, shifter, shifter boot, bellhousing, transmission, transfer case adapter, crossmember. I think that's about it. I'd put a new pressure plate, clutch disk throwout bearing, and resurface the flywheel while your at it. But get the old ones so you can make sure you get the right new one's. Also you'll need the pilot bearing that goes into your crankshaft. You may also want to grab the starter motor it may be different from the auto.
