...Fire Ants without gettin' burned to a radioactive crisp? I want to concentrate on melee, but my encounters with the mirelurks and the fire ants have led me to believe it's impossible to kick butt as a melee character. Also, I can't sneak up on 'em 'cuz I'm pretty low-level still (4, to be exact).
If there are two or more ants, obviously just shoot the antenna of one and it'll attack the other. Attack whichever one has more hp so after they finish fighting one will be really low on health.
If there is only one nearby, just charge right at it and take a little fire damage and then circle strafe around it and hit it with a melee weapon or your fists. It saves you a lot of ammo and you shouldn't ever get hit. This is mostly useful for the ant soldiers because the workers die in 1 hit to the head with some guns. You can even do this to the queen if you want. This trick may or may not work on other enemies but I haven't encountered anything as hard as fire ant soldiers.
