just rebuilt a chevy 350 that i put in a 84 corvette. i currently have a 160 degree stat and my fan comes on at 180. what do u guys suggest? here are some specs on the motor:
bored 30 over, 58 cc alm. heads, close to 10:1 comp ratio, msd ignition, i also put a aftermarket duel fan kit, and it no longer is cross fire injected i converted to a edlebrock 600 cfm carb.
Your fan comes on at 180 where the sensor is located, which dosn`t mean your coolant in the heads and block are at 180.
Why are you wanting to run your system that cold? Most GM systems have to run a min of 180 just for the rings to seal in the cylinders. Yes, the engineers figured for the metal expanding and contracting. Also, if you don`t reach proper temps, your fuel fails to atomize properly. Running an engine too cold can do damage just as well as running one too hot. What I recommend is putting it back to factory specs, which is the safest place for them to be . When I was racing I ran the small block chevy and hammered the day lights out of it. I found that I made more horse power at 190 and 200 degrees. I ran a 4 row 30 inch wide pontiac radiator to insure I didn`t over heat. It added a little more weight to the car with the extra water in it but, I knew my engine was safe from over heating. Just remember, too cold is as bad as too hot.
