German Shepherd with no sloping back?
Hi
I have an almost-11-month-old female GSD and she's really healthy. She gets high-quality kibble, daily mutlivitamins, occasional treats. She also gets Lactol a few times a week.
My question is she doesn't have that downward sloping back that GSDs are known for. Is this a problem? Does this indicate something?
She's also on the smaller side as well. My vet says its because she's a girl. Well she's approaching 11 months and only ways around 27kg.
Thanks
"German Shepherd with no sloping back" is not a QUESTION.
Actually, a GSD is supposed to have a sloping top-line (which is invariably what people in Y!A mean when they write "back".
The top-line starts with a NECK (7 bones) angled at 45° when standing, almost horizontal when gaiting. It merges into a much-less-steep WITHER (8 bones), an almost horizontal BACK (5 bones), then curves down through the LOIN (7 bones) into the CROUP which should be angled at 22½° from horizontal. Of course, the rebel KCs (i.e., those in Britain, Canada, the USofA) ignore the International Standard of the GSD: http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166g01-en-sv.doc and each invented its own wordy-but-vague documents that eliminate almost all the limits & Disqualifications in the REAL "Standard".
You presumably are contrasting your pet with the deviation to which we give the sneer-name NAmerican Ski-Slope Dog. If you look at one when it is being natural you will probably find that it has a neck that is FAR too steep, is almost dead level all the way through withers, back & loin, then has a croup that "drops off" the end of the loin. The NASSD probably also has a right-angle (90°) around each of its knees and heels, instead of the 120° specified in the International Standard of the GSD.
The only part of the multitude of Yank rebel "Standards" worth having is this drawing in the GSDCAmerica's Illustrated Standard: http://www.gsdca.org/Noframes/standard/Illo22.htm - what a pity that Yank breeders, handlers & judges can't read-&-understand such a "complicated" drawing, eh!
Pepsi is within the range of "normal weight" for her age, although the average is 28½ kg.
At 11 months she is likely to be 1cm taller than her mature height, so I hope she is at least 55cm tall (measured vertically above her elbow when standing four-square) - I doubt she is above 62cm, at her weight.
The answers to your 2 eventual questions are:
No.
Yes. (You didn't ask WHAT it indicates...)
And your idea of "feeding" in no way fits MY idea of feeding!
