Just got a cartilage piercing..when it is fully healed what is a normal ring, or hoop I can change my stud to?
I just got my cartilage pierced on my left ear yesterday afternoon and I have a couple questions. (I really didn't think about asking my piercer these questions cause everything went by so fast and I was nervous..so please don't ask me why I didn't ask them)
-I was doing research and I found that it can take 4-12 months for this piercing to heal. How do you know when it is completely healed?
-Is it best to wait for the piercing to completely heal before changing the earing?
-I want to change my stud to a ring or hoop. Not a thick one that is like a gauge or something, I just want it to be "normal" (as in the hold of my piercing doesn't really change) What are the karats or what are some examples of rings i can change into... links or brands are fine. (I'm looking for a gold, black, and silver ring)
Thank you so much:)
10 points.
It's the third day and when I spin it it doesn't hurt at all!:) Could this mean a possible (faster) healing process?
First thing (and this isn't just you, it's just about everyone who gets this piercing), it's a helix piercing. Yes, it's the cartilage part of your ear, but technically a cartilage piercing could be any area of your body that is made of cartilage. Since I assume you got a single helix (not a helix orbital, industrial, etc.), you can really put anything in it. Make sure whatever you put in there is the correct gauge though! When you're ready to change it, go to the place where you got the piercing and ask what gauge your current jewelry piece is (probably an 18 gauge if it's a small stud). All jewelry is a gauge, even earrings you buy at the mall. For typical lobe piercings, the gauge is 18. It's very small, but it's still a gauge.
It typically takes at least 4 months to heal (mine took six). My major indicators were that it no longer hurt, I could turn the ring without any issues (no more fluids, no skin sticking to the jewelry), stuff like that. You should definitely wait until your piercing is completely healed before changing it, otherwise you could prolong the healing process or cause infection. If you're looking for a ring (or horse shoe) most reputable places will use stainless steel instead of gold or silver. It stays clean easiest, and you can find a huge variety of colors. I highly recommend stainless steel unless you're looking for something fancy. Best of luck!
