Need an off camera flash, or a remote strobe light that won't require light meter readings for wedding purpose?
As I get more and more requests to photo weddings I want to have a remote flash in the reception room. I've seen it done before where the photographer had just a canon 580EX on light-stand using pocket wizards and an on camera flash. I'd do that but I'd rather invest in a strobe so I have it for my portraiture's. If I get a strobe it won't be ttl, would it? Would I have to use a light meter then? I can't be doing that in the middle a reception though.
You can easily use a 580 for portraits, it has plenty of power, don't discount it because it's a hotshoe flash. If you think it'll do well in a reception setting, go for it, hotshoe flashes are very versatile.
