I have an Onyoko receiver, an LG tv and a dvd player. I want to know how to hook them all to the receiver so I have surround sound when I am watching tv or a movie.
Depends on what your Onkyo receiver lets you do. Usually (since I have one as well), you can hook it up straight to the receiver (the dvd player) and run a line out to the tv. Now, you have a DVD player so you're not going to get real HD out of it even if the receiver or player ups it up to 1080p for you. If that was true, then we wouldn't need Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. So, it'll still be grainy in most cases and depending on the tv size as well. Connect your DVD player with component cables cables to the receiver. Then run a HDMI cable out to the tv. If the Onkyo receiver doesn't have a HDMI cable out, use a component cable out. Also, you can just hook the dvd player straight to the tv in most cases and then there's an audio out jack that'll turn every source (Blu-Ray, game systems, etc) to that cable. (You CAN get away with an RCA cable for that but it's not recommended The sound quality sucks... trust me.) That jack can be found on back of the tv and is usually the best way to go. Run the audio out jack to the receiver from the tv and you're set to go. Now any source you select from your tv will run straight to your receiver. That's how I have mine set up since it's less wires.
