Drowsy during the morning and alert at night?
It is almost impossible for me to keep my eyes open in the morning. It really hurts my productivity at work. I don't start to wake up until about 5pm. But then I'm alert and awake until 2am. I take sleeping pills if I want to fall asleep sooner, but I still wake up drowsy the next morning.
If I'm not on a work schedule, I usually sleep until 2-3pm, and go to sleep around 5 am. My natural body cycle is whacked.
Being forced to be at work at 8am is torture for me. It's like waking up a 2am to go to work would be for most people.
What's my problem???
I've tried sleeping pills (they make me drowsy, but don't make me sleep). I've also tried caffeine - it does nothing.
I have been forcing myself to be on a "normal" schedule for weeks now - but I cannot get used to it. By the weekend rolls around, I'm exhausted.
Well, it sounds like your body is not operating on it's proper sleep cycle. Don't worry, this happens to a lot of people. If you end up falling into a different pattern for even a weekend it can throw you out of balance and make it extremely difficult to return to a usual pattern. In your case, you mentioned that when you're not on a work schedule you sleep untl late in the afternoon and stay up until early in the morning. This is the root cause of your problem. Doing this has thrown your sleep cycle off and so when you actually have to go to bed early and wake up at a decent time, your body resists it because it is not used to it. Many people already feel drowsy in the morning and alert at night, and you're suffering a more pronounced case of this because of your habits.
This tends to happen to me during the summertime when i'm off from school. I get into the habit of staying up to 3 or 4 in the morning and end up sleeping past noon the next day. While it's definitely preferable in my case, it's not so much fun when school starts back up.
In any case, I would recommend that you try to bring your sleeping patterns back to normal whenever you are approaching a working schedule. You can either start setting alarms to get up an hour earlier each day and forcing yourself to lay in bed an hour earlier for a week until you're somewhat back to normal. (It will be hard, I warn you.) Or, a few days before you work again set your alarm for a really early hour or your usual work time and force yourself to get up no matter how tired you are. You'll be tired in the evening guaranteed so make sure that you go to bed at a decent hour and continue this regimen until you start work again. It should help.
And if that doesn't work, there's always sleep aids and caffeine to aid you in waking up and falling asleep.
But anyhow, that's your problem and an optional way to solve it if you choose to. Best of luck to you!
