How can I develop a more "mechanical" mind, and be good at fixing & understanding mechanical things?
I've always been more of a person that's good with computers, car radios, electrical wiring, etc. , but everything mechanical seems to stump me. I've read a book or two on cars but when I come across the illustrations and they point out the relationship between things like manifolds, intakes, servos, valves, vacuums, compressors and the like, it's like reading an upside-down map that's written in Chinese and I have no idea wtf they are talking about, even after looking up the definitions of each and trying to put A, B, & C together.
I really want to educate myself and learn the simple basics about mechanics in general so that I can better wrap my head around this stuff. Where's a good place to start or some good classes to take?
What you should concentrate on is understanding the basic engine principles (gas and diesel-fueld). That's where you'll understand what manifolds, intakes and compressors are about. Servos, valves and vacuums are automation elements and may not be essential, though found in most modern engines.
A good car mechanics training manual goes into sufficient depth on most important topics.
Another important issue are the materials - beside different metals (alloys), there are as many types of non-metallic materials, lubricants, fluids, seals.
Gettign your hands dirty with a more knowledgeable friend or in a mechanics shop is an excellent way of making A, B and C work for you.
If you have electrical knowledge, you're in a good position in understanding abstract concepts (those you can't touch, but can feel the effects such as ignition, heat etc). Apply your time and capabilities and you'll get where you want - many have had the same problem in the past.
