Car Radio, How to hook up a Pioneer Radio in a 1993 Ford Ranger with different plug-in harnesses?
How do I install a Pioneer DEH-P3500 radio in a 1993 Ford Ranger? It still has the factory radio in the truck. The Pioneer Radio has a difference harness plug, but it is labeled at the open ends with battery, ILL, MUTE, ACC, System Remote Control. I have no idea where to get an adapter that will fit the two harnesses. The truck is old and I only paid $20 for the new radio, so I don't want to spend much more... Can I hook up the wires straight without a harness? I can only find a wiring diagram for the Pioneer radio. TY
Thank you for all your help. I checked into the cost of a Harness and they are $15, so I will follow your suggestion and buy it. I thought it would be really complex and expensive. Again, Thank you!
if you want to hook it up without a harness, just start with all the wires stripped on the cd player and in the dash. usually a cd player will have a diagram on it telling which of its wires are which. as for the dash.... red is gonna be your main power wire, usually yellow is your constant, and black or a silver wire braid thing is your ground. then you just need to figure out which wire sets are for which speaker. speakers are usually color coded(ex. brown is rear positive, and brown with a white stripe is rear negative...and so on, just an example) to figure out which speaker the color is for, you can take a small 9v battery and hook up each end of the wire to it and listen to which speaker makes a small popping sound...then match that speaker wire set to the corresponding ones from the cd player. continue for all speakers, make sure every wire connection is completely covered to aoid grounding them out(electrical tape is cheap and works, but it ghetto and can sometimes cause bad connections, usually you want to get wire nuts(cheap from walmart in the car electrical or hardware section)) this should cover all your bases for a simple, no hrness hookup. good luck have fun.
and just for the record, there will prolly be at least a couple extra sets of wires from the cd player that you wont need such as the ill and mute. those are for adding other components through the cd player.
for the easiest install, get the right wiring harness for your vehicle, the colors on it should match up exactly on the cd player, just make the color coded connections, and then that cd player will plug directly into the current dash harness.
