I am planning on buying a Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Liberty or a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have heard both good and bad things about them. Does anyone have any insight on this and maybe some buying tips? The car will be from carmax so it will be a used vehicle.
Jeeps are generally decent vehicles. From about the mid 80's into 2000, the Jeep 4.0 straight 6 was used in many models. This engine is probably one of the best engines ever made, and is referred to as bullet proof. They last around 250-300K miles. You will see a lot of complaints on the web about Jeeps, but this is only because so many were sold and those people that have problems are typically the ones who vent their frustration.
The Wrangler is good vehicle, but not comfortable for everyday driving and does not have a lot of space inside, but great for off roading.
The Liberty, in addition to being a new design, is lighter and more cost reduced than other models and tends to have slightly more issues and doesn't drive as well as the Grand Cherokee.
The Grand Cherokee is more of a luxury SUV, not really used for off roading. It rides great (like a luxury car) but since it has all the bells and whistles, there are more things to go wrong with it.
Don't overlook the Cherokee it's a great all around vehicle and very rugged, although Chrysler stopped producing these in 2001.
