Scenario: I'm taking a right turn in my car (which is assumed will not flip over), and I sharply turn the wheel to the right. I do not press the brakes. My car slows down a few more miles an hour than if I'm going straight forward and do not hit the brakes. Why does this happen?
When you are travelling in a straight line at a steady, the friction force between the tires and the road is small. On the driven wheels it is only balancing the air resistance on the car. On the other two wheels it is almost nothing, since the friction of the tires is only keeping the wheels turning against the tiny amount of friction in the wheel bearings.
When you turn there is a sideways force accelerating the car towards the center of the circle. That is generated by friction on all 4 wheels. There is always a small amount of slipping between the tyres and the road surface (even if you are not skidding or drifting round the corner) which this is taking energy from the car and slowing it down.
