What is California law for cyclists when a light is red at an interesction but the bike lane is solid through?
Many cyclists in Califrornia have been unable to answer as to what the legal thing is to do when you have a red light for motor traffic at an intersection , usually a three way so that the bike lane is not crossed by traffic, and the bike lane line is painted solid all of the way through. Are you supposed to stop with other traffic as if the line did not go through? or stop and then proceed? or not even bother stopping? Under regular CA cycling laws, you do have to stop at a red, just like cars, but it does not mention this situation.
Bikes must follow all traffic laws that pertain to motor vehicles on the roadway. If you run a stop sign or stop light and you get hit, you are at fault. If a car is required to stop at an intersection with either a stop sign of stop light then proceed when it is clear and safe, a bicycle has to also do the same.
