i have a car amplifier and i want to put it in my home. i need to know before trying or buying anything. the amp has a 20 amp max on it, can i run the amp on 10 or less amps, or does it have to be the full 20 amps to sound good.
There's a big gray area here.
The fuse only tells you APPROXIMATELY the maximum current draw of the amp.
Maximum current draw will only occur when you run the amp at its minimum capable impedance and at full volume, so it is pretty safe to say your AVERAGE current requirement will be a lot less than 20A. Probably around 10, BUT there will be surges that may approach 20.
So I would say if you plan to push the amp relatively hard and you want it to run as comfortably as possible you need a 12-14v power supply that can provide 15-20A continuously capable of surges to 25A or so.
If you don't plan to run the amp that hard or you won't be running it at minimum impedance you might get by with a 10A pwr supply.
The question isn't so much good or bad sound. If the PS is inadequate it will either blow a fuse or be damaged trying to provide more current than its capable of, or the voltage to the amp will sag below 12v and it will shut itself down.
