I always plugged in the AC adaptor when using it, and it worked fine. The battery died a few days ago, so I thought with the AC adaptor I could just take out the battery and run on AC. Wouldn't work. Put the dead battery back in and tried to run on AC. Didn't work. Reseached and said to use AC adapter I needed a "clover leaf mains cable." Could not find much info on that but what I did find didn't look like it would be compatible with 'sockets' on adapter or computer. But I think that if I have an AC adaptor I should be able to run the laptop on that, dead battery or not. But is not working. What do I need to do? Do I need to buy a new battery (expensive) or how do I bypass the dead battery and use the AC adapter I have to get it running?

Batteries don't just die. They usually will hold a charge for a shorter and shorter time until you get to the point where the battery just won't hold a charge anymore. Either way, the laptop circuitry doesn't know if the battery won't hold a charge anymore, so as long as the AC adapter is plugged in, it should work.
And, very likely, it will work with the battery removed. I have an HP laptop with a missing battery, but it works fine as long as I stay plugged into the AC adapter.
The short answer is that your AC adapter probably died. If you have a friend with a voltmeter, have him check the output under load. Or just buy a new one. That's most likely what's wrong.
