My yorkie is afraid of other dogs? Even smaller ones?
He's 8 pounds and just turned a year old. He used to play with other dogs but when he was 7 months old he had an accident and suffered some brain damage, and has partial blindness. He loves to socialize with people but when he sees another dog he automatically cowers away and hides behind me or whoever is with him. BUT, when he's being held he acts like he's a 100 pound rottweiler and barks and growls.
I'd like for him to be able to play with other dogs and such, and it kind of makes me sad to see him so afraid.
Is there anyway to train him away from this? Or is this normal and it just depends on the dog?
he wasn't attacked by another dog, he was accidently dropped when he was being held and landed on his head on concrete ![]()
And yeah, I would never ever ever push him to play with other dogs.
I guess I was just more wondering if it was common behavior or more of a scared thing because of his accident.
Two main points.
First, many dogs, as they outgrow puppyhood outgrow the "need" (or have less need) for doggy playmates.
Second, your dog was hurt by another dog, so it has good reason to be cautious!
One of my dogs was very social as a pup. Then, during play, he was hurt. After that, he kept a fair distance from other dogs and only trusted them when he got to know them well. Mine was a big dog and physical, so I can only guess your little guy, being partly blind, is being "safe."

If you really want him to have a playmate, you may need to find a dog that you can see often and in a controlled environment, giving your guy plenty of time, space, and encouragement to grow accustomed to the other dog. Make sure the other dog is dog-friendly and accomodating. Give treats to both dogs when they are sitting nicely together. Praise them both when they are interacting nicely. My dog is really proud when she hears a "good dog." Please don't feel bad (or judgemental) if the dogs "don't like each other." Dogs are like people, you can't just force them to be "best friends." You can, however, teach them to be tolerant and respectful of each other.
You can also google sites like the spca or the humane society and check out online libraries. look for info on shy dogs, and dog to dog introductions.
Good luck with whatever you decide!
BTW, I think just picking him up and walking by when encountering another dog is a great move on your part! It is very responsible and considerate of other dog owners.
Thanks!
