I bought a Stanton belt-driven turntable yesterday. Included came with the RCA cable (the red and white pronged cables) but attached to that same cable is a ground (GND) cable that you has the "y" shaped piece that you have to slide under a screw to connect if. I tried hooking it up to my surround sound system in my room, but there isn't enough volume coming out of the receiver and my receiver does not allow me to hook up a ground wire, just the RCA cables. What am I doing wrong?
Turntables provide a very low power output. In order to get satisfactory volume out of them they need to be run through a pre-amp, which boosts the signal up to a level which the surround sound system can use. DJ mixers come with pre-amps and some sound systems will to. If you connect it into the system it must be via an input labelled "Phono". Connecting it to "line" will not work, because a line input means the signal is strong, and so you will not hear much when you put a weak signal from the turntable in!
