Why does a rear facing car seat need to be positioned at a 45 degree angle?
I consider myself well-informed about child safety seats and their installation, but I am curious as to WHY a rear-facing seat needs to be at a 45 degree angle. I'm not disputing this, I'm just curious what would happen if it was installed tightly but at a 90 degree angle, with the child lying flat on his back.

Its b/c of the risk of a newborn's head flopping forward and cutting off their airway. Once a baby has learned to hold his head up and keep it comfortably back without it flopping forward, its safer to move to a more upright position where the back of the car seat can absorb more crash impact in an accident.
